Can anybody provide me a little info on how to record knob and fader movements over a sequence? I have a sequence recorded and I put it into record override mode, but the filter knobs don’t seem to do anything at that point. Any ideas?
Hold the pad while turning the filter knobs (and be sure button B is lit for recording filter cutoff/resonance changes, and button A for volume level changes).
It still doesn’t work. Anybody have experience with this? I can make filter sweeps in ‘playback override’ (‘B’ lit in playback mode) but when in ‘record override mode’ (‘B’ lit while recording) turning the filter knobs have no effect at all. The knob graphic shows my movements, but there is no effect on the sound. Even when holding the pad down… HELP!!!
I’m sure you’ve figured this out by now, but for posterity: the sequencer only records knob/fader changes at a “note on” trigger. So if you’re trying to record filter automation over the course of a single long sample, it will only record the state of the filter knob when the track is triggered. Which, effectively, is no automation at all, if your sample is only triggered, say, at the beginning of the sequence.
I’m not in front of my S2400 right now, but I had an idea today that might help for longer samples or bounced patterns. Copy the sound to another pad and set the volume and/or filter envelopes to sweep, or fade in/out, or whatever. Since the envelopes are set to the length of the sample, I think it’d be possible to sweep a filter or slowly fade in/out a sample using the sample-length envelopes, yeah?
Will try tonight
That should work , but you will only be able to sweep to env shape.
Even if we didn’t get Lfos a looping envelope would be great.
Then again I don’t want this machine to become too complex like an Elektron box , even if they are quite intuitive. Its beauty is it’s a straight forward machine forcing experiments while being very utilitarian and purposeful.
For me at least the filters are more important at the moment as a simple EQ.
Agreed! Following up, I tried to fade in a long’ish 8-bar sample by having the vol attack go from start to finish in the high-fi waveform view, so the shape is basically a diagonal line from bottom left to top right, but… the sample did NOT fade in over 8-bars (pattern and sample length), the volume faded in, but it was at full volume well before 8-bars. Is that expected? I thought the width of the envelope was sample length, no?
That is weird, I wonder if the envelopes aren’t exactly linear even if the graphic depicts it ?
I’ll have to try some experiments , hmmm
thanks man that makes sense and it seems to behave that way. Looks like it IS possible to automate filter cutoff using midi CC messages, so maybe there is some hope of just recording filter sweeps with a sequencer and playing them back that way. Its a bummer we cant just do that inside the S2400 sequencer.
I agree. Sounds like there may be some changes to how this works with the DSP card. After I get it and try it out, I’ll try to remember to post an update here if that’s the case.
