Local off option

Would be useful for when using external sequencer/midi recorder.

In the midi CC chart it has CC122 labelled as “local off”. Sounds like what you want (though I haven’t tried it).

Nice thanks!

Any updates on this? The CC for “Local off” sent from a sequencer does not seem to work for me. It’s a bit cumbersome to miss this MIDI functionality when working in a DAW, as everything coming to the MIDI IN of the S2400 gets echoed/repeated on the MIDI OUT. I can mute the track in the DAW, but then I can’t hear what I sequenced earlier. I’d basically have to play the pads on an external keyboard, which kind of defeats the purpose of having those nice pads in the first place.

One last thought - if a new “Local Off” function is too hard to implement, it would already help immensely if we could switch off the echoing of notes, so that notes received by MIDI IN are not re-sent by the MIDI OUT. This behavior does not make much sense, plus the MIDI THRU port already offers that anyway.

Yes i was also going to say this! This would actually be better as you could still play the pads on s2400 and not worry about midi loops.

I saw in the manual there is an echo off already!

Really?? How on earth did I miss that?

AAARGH, you’re right, this could be it… page 72, MIDI Jack Settings > Notes In: “Accept MIDI note on/off messages to play tracks. If a track is played via MIDI, the note on/off messages will not be echoed back to the source of the MIDI message.”

It’s a bit unclear what settings are available but maybe this does indeed refer to external MIDI. Have to test right away tomorrow!

Nope, cross-checked my notes and re-tested, and this is actually exactly what I had tested:

  • If “Notes out” AND “Notes In” are selected, you get an endless MIDI loop. Any note received at MIDI-In gets re-sent to MIDI-Out i.e. the MIDI-Out behaves as if it was a MIDI-Thru port.

  • De-selecting either “Notes out” or “Notes In” breaks this loop but obviously also then does not allow MIDI recording to/playback from the DAW.

Summary: MIDI-In and MIDI-Out in my opinion do not work correctly, as there is no scenario in which echoing incoming notes makes sense. There is already the MIDI-Thru port for that. Could we please have an option to deactivate this echoing?

Curious, did you select “echo off” in settings?

Thank you so much again, I’ll try this one as well! Can’t understand how I keep on missing these sections and options, both in the manual and menus, despite going through them multiple times. Too many setting I guess… I’ll report back.

Spot-on, thank you so much for pointing me to the right setting. Got it working!

By default the S2400 will receive note data on MIDI Channel 10. Set up the track accordingly.

Go to the MIDI setup in the SYNC menu (SHIFT + 4th button “Sync”):

2nd entry CONTROL SETTINGS: Disable 5/ECHO.

3rd entry MIDI DIN JACK: Enable

  • 1/Notes out
  • 6/Notes in *
  • 7/Velocity in

8th entry SAMPLE TRACKS MAP: Scroll down and assign pads A1-A8 to something else than the default “NONE” (e.g. “Percussion”) so the Pads trigger something. Shortcut to each Pad’s menu entry by pressing the Pads A1-A8.

Yay!

*) Edit: The “Notes In” description in the manual is a bit misleading: “If a track is played via MIDI, the note on/off messages will not be echoed back to the source of the MIDI message.” This text is not correct and should be moved to the “Echo” settings description.

@LeadingMotive thanks for pointing out the error in the manual. That text was there from before echo was a feature.
