Feature Request #06[1] – Finer Groove Settings
Topics: groove, microtiming, swing
Pretext
I appreciate a lot (!) that the S2400 offers more groove values (50%, 52%, 54%, 56%, 58%, 60%, 63%, 65%, 67%, 69%, 71%, 73%, or 75%) than the SP1200 (swing factor 54%, 58%, 63%, 67%, or 71%), and especially that swing can be set per track (!). That’s very powerful. =) Thank you so much for that!
While playing with this, especially using per-track swing, I felt the need for even finer control to explore the new possibilities to the fullest. (Dial in groove by ear, especially in the 50–63% range).
I can imagine the groove templates might be hardcoded — so implementation may not be as simple as it seems at first glance.
Function suggestion 1) – Continuous groove setting
If swing is calculated procedurally, allow it to be set:
- Anywhere between 50.0–100.0%
- Or even 0.0–50.0% for reverse shuffle feels
- UI: same as now, but allow full range + decimal values (via shift or encoder push)
Alternative function suggestion 2) – If templates are hardcoded
- Add more fine-grained swing options between 50.0% and 63.0%
- Consider importing classic Notator SL groove templates (see FR05)
What would be gained
- More precise groove and microtiming control
- Groove can be dialed in by ear, not fixed steps
- Especially useful when balancing swing with tempo, sample feel, and track interplay
