did you get the DBX compressor set up? How’s it sound?

I did mate and it sounds fantastic :heart_eyes:

I set up the desk at the weekend, and am using the DBX as an insert on the drum bus for parallel compression and wow, it sounds so alive. I’m using a hard knee, adjusting the output gain to match loudness, and it really sounds amazing while preserving the transients on the dry bus channel. It might sound crazy doing all this OTB but it’s just for fun, the limitations are ridiculous, like the amount of outboard needed for a full track, and lack of instrument busses, if I was doing this as a profession I’d be totally ITB. I just love tweaking knobs :joy:

Oh, I’m picking up a 3630 tonight, just to complete the Alesis trilogy. I can’t wait to try out the side chain and see how the limiter sounds on the stereo bus.

Fire emoji! I got an 3630 in the mail a few days ago, but with the wrong power supply, so i haven’t hooked it up yet. You plan to use yours on the master out?

So I setup the 3630 last night. I used the matrix output section on the A&H Z4** to send a sub mix of all 4 GRP busses to the 3630, and sent the output back into the mixer for a few dB of parallel compression going to the main mix. Sounded good to me! Yes there is noise, which will be unacceptable for some. (edit - the noise was actually the S2400 analog filter on outputs 1&2)

I didn’t have a spare TRS cable to try out the famous side chain, which I think is probably the best use for the 3630. I’m just going to play around with it, it’s a great tool for learning on, and if it sounds as terrible as the GS community say it does, then I’ll find that out for myself eventually.

For now, I’m excited to have it there in the rack, lifting up the sound of my mix and giving it a bit more punch and presence before it hits the DAW - where better options will be available for the job if I need them.

Which DBX model you got? I’m planning to do a similar setup soon.

it’s the older DBX160X model. They come up for sale less often here in the UK so I grabbed one when I had the chance, would’ve got the 160A or XT otherwise

Ok. How do you use it being a mono compressor? Do you apply it to like a kick or snare? Sorry for the questions, I’m still a noob on this type of hardware.

I have a mono drum break on mixer channel one, routed to GRP 1&2. The compressor is used on the insert of GRP1, with GRP2 receiving only dry signal. I can route additional channels to GRP1&2 (EQ’d snare on CH2, hats on CH3) and they’ll be treated by the compressor the same way on the insert of GRP1, and that’s parallel compression on the drum bus = GRP1 Wet, GRP2 Dry

It helps if you have a mixer with bus groups, otherwise you can use aux sends and return the wet signal to another mixer channel. Either way will get the job done. You’ll need a TRS Y cable for the insert method, or regular TS/TRS cables for AUX send/return. I’ll try and get a video up this weekend.

I know a bit about P-Comp, which blends the compressed signal with the dry. I have a Behringer Xenyx X2442USB which has subgroups (I was actually trying to sell it to get funds for a compressor).

I also have the Tascam Model 12 but that only has inserts on channels 1&2.

Looking at those mixers I don’t see inserts on the bus group on the Xenyx, so you could use aux sends per channel out to the compressor input and route the output to its own mixer channel.

After a bit more research I came across the FMR RNC and it looks way more up to the task for mix bus compression on a budget. By all accounts it punches well above its price point. The 3630 seems to be the polar opposite, I can’t find any love for it. I’ve ordered the RNC, will keep both and try them side by side, hopefully there’ll be a reason to keep the 3630 around.
