FR04 - pre-record buffer in sampling mode

Feature Request #04[1]:

Topics: transients, microtiming, groove
System level: sampling

Function: pre-record buffer in sampling mode

  • While in sampling mode:
    • continuously record into a rolling buffer
  • When sampling begins (manually or via threshold):
    • include a pre-defined length of prior audio from the buffer (4s, 2s, 1s, 500ms, or user-defined)

Result/gain:

  • No missed transients or hits
  • Useful for directly added natural silence/‚air‘ before sample start (no need for manual post-processing)
    • for classic SP1200/MPC technique:
      • move/shift sample start point for
        • syncopated, laid-back, swung etc. grooves
        • precise positioning of transients for optimum punch (like in layered drums)
        • precise positioning of samples for reducing phase problems (like in layered drums)

Bonus:

  • Recording starts with zero point crossing
  • System suggests sample start point (by transient analysis) directly after sampling
History
  • was a very useful feature in some classic samplers, need to check, but I believe Ensoniq EPS and some MPCs

This is your 4th feature request that basically deals with the same topic the other three are about.
you want to nudge your (i guess) drum hits slightly to create certain grooves/timings, right?
How about always leaving some “air” or “space” before the first transient hits and then shift the starting point of that sample afterwards? that’s the way i do it, works perfect.

Is this a critique? These are technically different feature requests. Nowhere do I demand implementation or anything like that. But yes, with the S2400—and in the genres where the SP-1200, MPC60, etc. are used—microtiming, groove, etc. are extremely important. (Btw, FR01 is about something completely different.)

FYI: 1) I don’t have questions for workarounds. I know them. If I had questions, I would ask in the appropriate section of the forum. 2) I am in no way frustrated or not satisfied with S2400. I am happy with the S2400 as it is. I just post FR as the structure of this forum invites. Ignore if not relevant. Cheers!
