Tracking into Daw

Does anybody build a best with programs….and then take the final beat and dump it into daw in realtime….Then organize/build up/breakdown etc in the daw to finalize their beat? If so….how do I route it. I plan on using fruity loops. I’m just terrible at song mode on this thing.

Yes but I don’t know anything about FL.

In Ableton Live, I run the 8 analog outputs into an Alesis AI3, which connects to one of the ADAT inputs on my MOTU 16A. Recording is simple. I do raw composition on the S2400 and then record and arrange in Live. Sometimes I’ll dig into song mode depending on the sample/arrangement (especially if using time based effects with the S2400 DSP) but usually record and then move stuff around/manipulate.

Hey mate,

I run the 8 analog outs into an Audient Evo 16 and SP8 and track into Harrison Mixbus or Studio One, depending on how I am feeling on that day. All pretty straightforward, easy and quick.

i use the Audio over USB option into Logic.
usually track 4 or 8 bars of a sequence and start arranging from there.

Please learn about locking clocks and PPQN. Standard PPQN for DAWs is usually set to 24. the S2400 is default 96, this will cause drifting to occur depending on which clock is master. This can be a feature or it can be detrimental, depends on whether or not you know what you’re doing.

The main reason to do this is so you can edit afterwards using the grid, rather than just pressing record and hoping for the best.

Ive updated since I posted…I now currently run my s2400 into my focusrite 18i20 3rd gen…then into macbook air m4 woth ableton and its been working beautifully. If im not using midi or adat do I still need to mess with the internal clock like you suggest? If so what menu is the clock in?

Pretty sure it’s under “Sync”, but a suggestion: since you’re on Apple, download the S2400 manual in PDF format and open with “Books”. Then use the search option. Books automatically saves your PDFs when you choose open with and you’ll now have it throughout your entire Mac ecosystem.

Not sure how to implement a topic? Search some keywords in the manual.

Of course double down and still frequent this forum because this community and friendly and knowledgeable and the fact that the brains behind this instrument is somewhat readily available to answer questions is just amazing.

Thanks Brad, you designed the most inspiring and immediate device I’ve ever used. The only thing it’s missing is an onboard analog synth. The Moog Mavis could easily fit within the S2400 chassis… maybe we can think about something like that? Although I suppose that would render the Caladan somewhat less exciting.

Good looking out… I will do exactly what you just suggested. I have to say this device has really made it simple for me to get my beat ideas out fast and with less steps than any mpc…404… sampler I’ve worked with… and I’ve worked with just About all I could get my hands on. I’ll never stop using my s2400… it’s the brains of my setup.
