DSP Plugin discussion

Here are a few plugins I threw together over the past week. I hope it’s ok to post these here. A couple of notes: the delay based effects may not be as optimized as I’d like. I rebuilt optimized versions this morning but I got the dreaded “insert error” when testing so I had to back out my changes. If freeverb sounds funky adjust the mix ratio. If the polysynth sounds clicky it’s probably the adsr but I’m not putting any more work into that one until I get bandlimited wavetables to build properly. I hate the sound of the polyBLEP oscillators so if you’re not super impressed with how they sound just know I feel the same. REALLY need to get wavetables building. Anyhow, enjoy and be sure to experiment. I threw in a kick drum synth that I really like as well.

PS I assume everyone knows how to route midi to a track running a DSP instrument? I just select a midi track go to Midi Ports and select Out to DSP Card. maybe there’s a way to do it without using up a midi track?

https://github.com/countbinoculars/Haunted-Factory-lv2/releases/download/v1.0.0/HF_S2400_lv2.zip

I’ll release the source as soon as I get things building reliably. The plugins appear under HauntedFactory in the S2400’s DSP Card directory after you put them in place and sync.

Also, sorry if the plugins are a bit unorganized. they’re all mixed together but you should be able to tell the synths from the effects by name. There are a lot of weird wave shapers in there. you’ll figure it out.

Thank you!

I’ve just been playing with them for more than an hour, and must say, they are incredible! Thx again

EDIT: Specially the kick synth!

You’re super welcome. Glad you like them… that kick synth is surprisingly dope :joy:

Does anybody have arm linux version of emu filter emulations by Airwindows? ZLowpass2 | Airwindows

@bradholland is there a way of uninstalling plug-ins that don’t seem to work? Also is there any way of categorising new plug-ins that are installed in folders similar to the way that the card has folders for the pre-installed plug-ins?

You can delete plugins by deleting them from the sd card and resyncing the plugins in the dsp settings.

And no, for now I think that is the categorization that we get.

@Asier Thanks for clarifying

Thanks so much for these!

I’ve slowly been going through these as the need arises, and I’m really impressed with the ones I’ve messed around with. The Korg35-LP is quickly earning a place on my drum bus.

Hi All,

”I would like to inform you that since I have installed DSP into my S2400 sampler is not usable. I mean, there are a lot of audio crackles, even when there is no FX turn on or even assigned to any track/sound. Also after turning S2400 on it is running like for 1-5 minutes and after that there is some kind of non-stop playing sound glitch and I can walk through menus, but sound is “dead”. Another thing is that sometimes audio breaks at all and there is dead silence. In the end I ended up removing DSP from my unit, because like I said before, it is unusable with it.” This was my initial message to Support and then Rob advised, that it is probably because of wrong installation, “So I have put DSP back to S2400 and it still makes exactly the same issues. I thought attaching some audio clips, photos and video will make it better to identify the issue for you.

Clip 1 - you can hear beat playing with couple FXs on it and in the middle I put another reverb to the project, then you can hear the harsh sound

Clip 2 - it was recorded exactly after unit restart, project has FXs on it, so you can hear very distorted sound since the beginning of it, later on, I switch them off and after couple of seconds you can hear that one channel suddenly disappear and another channel right after, when this happens I need to restart S2400 (turn off and on), because audio will not come back again.

On the photos you can see DSP itself (does this X mark mean anything maybe? It was there when I have received it from you Guys), screen showing that I got firmware up to date; another screen showing that DSP is initializing (so I think it was installed correctly, no?); how DSP was installed into the machine.

Just so we are on the same page, I have followed video from Brad where he shows how to put DSP into the unit. It wasn’t hard, so I am not really sure what I could do wrong here.

Thanks,

Adam

Are you using the included Airwindows plugins? If so, it turns out that many of them are very resource-intensive and will bomb out the audio when you have too too many of them running simultaneously. That number varies depending on the plugins.

I definitely had the same reaction as you the first time I experienced this and rushed here in a panic to ask about it, worried that I screwed up the install. After doing some tests and posting the results, someone far more knowledgeable than I pointed out that the Airwindows plugins use a lot more dithering than they probably need to, which makes them resource hogs. There was subsequent talk about Isla potentially doing an optimization pass on the Airwindows stuff once the dust settles over there with Caladan, but I don’t know if that’s still in the cards.

I used the links people posted in this thread to cram my DSP card full of more plugins than I’ll ever use, and haven’t had an overload problem with any of them yet. It turns out there’s a ton of cool, free stuff out there!

As for the “x” on the card, I believe that’s something Isla does to keep track of completed tasks while doing final assembly on the cards.

So sorry to hear that. I also had several issues and had to file to support ticket when I receive my dsp card a few weeks ago. I can totally to you relate to how annoying it is. I am still experiencing occasional dropouts and sometimes that the machine freezes entirely. In comparison to the machine without the DSP card, it feels like a downgrade that the machine is no longer stable as it was before.

In addition to optimisation that was mentioned in the previous post, some form of CPU meter would be a great indicator as to how heavy the processor is loaded with VST’s. I’m sure everybody has different ways of using VST and VST chains. In my case, it is very sparing me with not more than a total of four or five VST‘s per project. It would be great to know what type of mileage you could get out of creating your own effects configurations and then saving them, knowing that it is not pushing the DSP card to its Max.

Another separate thought of the back of this topic. I was wondering if it would be possible for us to source together a full comprehensive list of VST that actually work on the s2400. It looks like the webpage will not be upgraded for awhile that contains this information. At the moment it seems more trial and error. I think many of us are loading the DSP card with lots of VST’s and then trying them out to find out which ones we can actually use. Somehow I have a feeling that there could be an easier way for everyone to carefully select what plug-ins they actually would like to use and would be useful for their particular style of production and workflow. I’ve been thinking of compiling something together but I’m not exactly sure what would be the best way. Reading through this extensive thread is somewhat exhausting when you first buy the DSP card and want to get started. Also, it would be great to maybe state which plug-in installers should be used and which one should be avoided. Again, not everybody has the same level of understanding when it comes to the different type of Linux installers and I think this would be helpful.

If anyone thinks this is a good idea, I would be open to recommendations on how we could compile it so everyone in the forum has access to this living document/thread. It could be a simple as pinning a post to the top of this thread or creating a Google doc.

I can see that you have routed the flat ribbon cable underneath the DSP card, so that is correct.
My only guess here is that I have assembled the card heatsink wrong. perhaps you can check to make sure the heatsink is firmly on the cpu and that there is a piece of rubbery material sandwiched between the red heatsink and the chip on the board.

are you absolutely sure you have NO plugins loaded? did you assign a bunch of different liveFX to the pads?

inside the project folder you could try deleting the dsp settings file it may have somehow become corrupted.

Hi guys, quick question: is it possible to delete some of the stock dsp plugins? There’s so many of em that I get overwhelmed going through them sometimes and I would like to focus on my favorite ones and delete the others. Can’t figure out how to do this because they dont show up in the sd card and you cant delete them internally it seems..? Is this possible?

I’m brand new to this but I think you have to delete it while connected to the computer then re-sync the plug-in?

Thanks for replying. That works for the plugins you load onto the sd card yourself, but at least on my unit the plugins which came with the dsp card are not visible, so I cant delete them, unlike the ones I placed there myself.

Mix outs with and w/o DSP

Can anyone confirm that the signal from the mix outs of the S2400 with built-in DSP card is automatically louder and cleaner/lower in noise than without, since the signal is then mixed digitally?

If so, is this already the case without using any plugins such as a compressor to boost the signal—is pure digital volume control sufficient for this? Much more headroom and better S/N ratio?

Does the RX950 plugin sound just as good on the S2400 as the Windows version of the plugin on a PC?

Thank you!

Where i can buy a DSP Card?

Hi folks, fairly new to my setup and in music producing in general (doing this as a hobby). I believe that I also have a buying gear syndrome and now I have that Analog Heat in my mind but considering that I also have a DSP card installed, I am not sure if I want to spend another k on a new gear. Right now my setup consist in S2400 with DSP and a Tascam Model12 and besides the fact that I cannot find a logical way of linking the analog heat with this setup without affecting the 8 outputs of the S24, I am assuming that I can do most of the things that Heat can do with some plugins … but I am not sure what type of plugins are a sort of “replacement” for the HEAT. -right now I only use RX950. Any input on this will be really appreciated.

I also use RX950 and an Analog Heat.

Are you recording to the Model 12, or using it as an interface for a DAW? Are you looking to use the Heat on the stero bus, or do you plan on running specific things through it? What do you want to accomplish with it?

If you’re tracking into a DAW, the Heat works with Elektron’s Overbridge software, so you can use it as a plugin in your DAW using USB.

My drum chain is Airwindows Drumslam > reverb > RX950 > then Analog Heat on the way to the mixer. All of my gear is wired into patch bays so I can route easily signals where I need to. Note that I haven’t come up with Heat master-bus settings for the S2400 that I’m happy with just yet. Sampling in Classic Mode gives you plenty of grit and crunch on its own. I suspect it will eventually be case-by-case EQ and filtering.

For the way I use the Heat (saturation and grit), Drumslam and driving the RX950 input gain can get me most of the way there (though the Heat’s EQ and filter sections are also critical components of its sound, so you miss out on that aspect), so I would experiment with what you already have if you don’t want to drop more money right away.

That being said, I do think my Analog Heat is one of the best gear purchases I’ve made. I love it. I’d probably by a second one if I found one cheap enough. It definitely helped define the sound of my first two tapes that were made with my MPC X.
