What sampler is everyone coming from? Which are you keeping/Ditching?

The following are a list of samplers I’ve owned then sold in my recording studio over the years. Akai S01, Akai MPC 60 MKII, MPC 2000XL 2 both the white and limited edition blue color, Akai MPC 4000, E-mu 6400, E-mu Sp-12 Turbo, E-mu SP1200 both the grey and black later edition, Ensoniq ASR 10 Keyboards 2 with purple screens. I currently own an Akai MPC 5000 fully expanded, Roland MC 909 fully expanded and the older model with LED screen Ensoniq ASR 10 fully expanded and being restored as we speak as well as Serato Sample software. I’m currently waiting on my Isla S2400 to arrive. My favorite samplers are: ASR 10 due to it’s simplicity of use as well as the E-mu SP1200’s simplicity of use. I notice being most productive on those 2 machines. They were both mapped out great very easy to learn. Serato Sample software is highly recommend for it’s incredible time stretching with no noticeable artifacts to the sample. Sounds super clear. It’s also able to speed things up or slow em down without any chipmunking as well as changing a samples main pitch range to any key without artifacts. Technology is incredible! I plan to use the software to create new samples then put them into the ASR or S2400 for chopping and sequencing.

I have an OG Octatrack that I’m keeping mostly for sentimental value (it was a preorder/my first Elektron machine) but I still think it’s great. I’ve sold off an OG MPC Live and X because I bought a Maschine+ (while my S2400 sat dormant in its case… liked it, but room was an issue).

I don’t know if I will get rid of the Maschine+ (so long as NI doesn’t fuck us over on running Reaktor instruments like they did with Kontakt…) but maybe.

Right now the S2400 is front and center, hooked up to my PC over USB, and analog via my interface. I can sample anything I want to.

I don’t think my OG Volca Sample really counts, but I don’t know that it’s worth selling off.

I saw one of these in person once and almost bought it. I wasn’t really into MPCs back then though, and didn’t appreciate its beat up appearance like I would today lol. I hear they’re pretty great MPCs though.

Takes me back. Underrated box imo. It was a lot of fun, I had some SRX cards for mine back then.

The only samplers that I used to own were the MV8800 and the 2000XL.

Currently I own the Maschine+ and the S2400 and I’m not selling either. I have some muscle memory with the Maschine and I like it for portability reasons when hooked up to a batterypack. Such a joy to play it on the couch downstairs when I want to sit with the rest of the fam or take it with me on vacation.

I must admit that although I’ve never owned or played with the SP1200, there is nothing like the workflow and build quality of the S2400. By far the best and most fun sampler I’ve ever owned. Can’t wait to throw in that DSP card and accompany it with the Caladan!

I own and use:
MPC 2000 Classic
MPC One
SP404 Mk2
EP-133
s2400 (It is coming, I had to send it back and waiting for a new unit to arrive)
I own and don’t use but not selling:
MPC 500 (Maybe this will be selling in some kinda future)
MPC 1000
2xAkai s1100

Recently sold the MC707 to fund the s2400 I was not using it enough

I started as a Club DJ around 1987, did that for more than a decade. Also ventured into Turntablism for a while. Started making music around 2002. These are the only “samplers” I actually had before the S2400:

Ive used mpc 60 mpc 3000 mpc 2000xl mpc live 2 mpc 1000 and now s2400. My favorites are the Mpc 60 and 3000 …the s2400 is growing on me slowly as I learn the workflow…seems like I discover something new as far as features on the 2400 every day…… I like the filters and the overall sound of the unit.

I still have my OG Octatrack, preordered it. It’s been a long time since I’ve f’d with it, but that’s nothing against it.

I’ve had a MPC X and Live, sold them both (and kinda regret it after Akai just took off like a rocket on the platform lol).

I still have my Maschine+ which tbh feels like NI missed its potential. Bummer. Its still a really nice controller for Bitwig.

My S2400 is the nicest piece of gear I own by far (aside from a slight warp, it rocks unless I put a guitar pick under the left front foot XD). It sits front and center atm and is hooked up to my interface so I can sample off the computer and/or a tape deck I have.

I can’t wait for the DSP card, I could use it as an ambient machine, etc

I really wanted to get in on the preorder, but being forced to buy voice cards I don’t want when it has a digital synth engine already made me salty lol. I sold my Parva once already :eyes:

If it bothers you, you can probably fix your S2400 rocking by unscrewing and re-tightening case screws while the unit is on the flat surface and you press on top of all corners

which I plan to do as soon as my DSP card finally arrives

it’s a little slow, the DAC chip got discontinued so they had to do a revision

SP808ex , great fx section with step sequencing , horrible mono synth and useless sample sequencer, as sound plays from the zip directly , save the zip couldn’t keep up even with phrase samples.
Worse thing was I coveting the Yamaha SU700 in futuremusic mag for months and chose the sp808 because of the effects. The SU700 not only looks great but had the same amp as the rack unit , forget its name. It sounded really nice and had great filters.
Much better machine.
I bought one about 15 years later with flash reader / floppy emulator , then sold it , which was dumb as it held so much nostalgia.

Then boss sp505 , horrible plastic thing , mainly used it when djing , but it did have an event sequencer.

Others
Mpc2000xl and I even had the MFC filter mounts, looked bizarre purched on top.
Mpc500
Maschine v2
SP16 great but couldn’t get past the crap out of date touch screen and the cheezy pioneer fx.
Maschine Plus , ok, shit filters though , felt too much like software as well. Love the drum synths.
Maschinedrum, one of the last made , sold it , unique but the drums are thin , it’s great for everything except drums though. As a sampler PITA , life’s too short.

Currently

Mc707 , best groove box I’ve ever used hands down , and I’ve had a few, Elektron, Korg etc.
It’s a beast, you can link the channels to make massive fx chains. It’s the groovebox I wanted 20 years ago. Too bad it sounds flat and lifeless.

Roland sp404 mk 2 , it’s great , it’s a keeper but you need to read a manual every time you use it, way too many combos to do things.

S2400 , great so far , best sounding sampler I’ve owned. Love Live Loops , love the different working style , still nervous about outputs not changing sometimes, still clinging onto the fact it’s user error , we will see.

Samplers I want …
Currently Nordwave 2

                  Fin

Oh yes I take pics of all my gear and keep them lol

Even before reading your post and just scrolling thru your pictures I was just about to say that the Yamaha looked great!!!

Never heard of this particular machine though.

I’ve had a few…
Started out with an Ensoniq Mirage in '87, then took a break for 10 years
Then Ensoniq EPS for a couple years, then took a break to travel the world etc
Then a period when stuff was really cheap so I bought it all… MPC 2000xl, MPC 3000, Akai S900, S5000, S2000, MPC 2500, MPC 1000, ASR X Pro, Roland SP-808 (this was in conjunction with a whole studio of hardware)
Right now, I’ve settled down - S2400, EPS Classic (4x expansion), S900, S3000xl, S2800, Akai MPC 2000xl SE2, and a fully loaded OG MPC 2000xl
I do enjoy the S2400 a lot - and Brad and his team have done a fantastic job on the machine, although my number 1 at the moment is the MPC 2000xl.
