Masters of the Beats Part 1. A Kenny Dope Type Old School House beat

Hey Guys,

I hope you are all well.

I thought I would share my latest video where I deconstruct and reconstruct the Master at Work, Kenny Dope.
I look at techniques he uses when beatmaking and put together a Kenny Dope type beat in the Isla Instruments S2400.
Shout out and respect to Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez.

Thank you for watching.

Lots of insights. Thanks!
Can you please share your quantize settings?

Hey mate, nothing that complicated really. Quantize is set to 1/16 with 63% swing most of the time on that beat.

Great video, looking forward to more of 2400 videos.

Great video Conan, keep em coming!

I don’t mean to derail the thread but I noticed at 18:26 the kick drum drops out for a step without you muting anything. I’ve had similar issues with my 2400 and was going to make a video and post it in this forum to see if anyone else had these dropouts but seeing as you already have video evidence I’ll start the convo here if that’s ok?

For me the dropouts are hard to recreate consistently but they seem to occur when wiggling filters, changing slider positions etc. It’s not a big deal when building a track but I had hoped to replace my mpc2000xl with the 2400 for live use and obvs the dropouts would be less than ideal in a live situation.

So I have a few questions:

Have you noticed these happening often for you?
Does anyone else have these dropouts?
Is there an existing forum post about this (I can’t find one)?

You are probably better off starting your own post on this mate as nobody is going to come looking for it on this post.

That being said, yes I noticed it when I was making the video.

In answer to your questions, it was the first time it has ever happened to me to be honest.

Thanks Conan, yep will make a new post. Can’t wait for the Todd Terry vid BTW, I’ve often tried to break down his beats (such a unique skippiness) but never quite unlocked how he does it… my fave track of his: Bounce To The Beat!

Yes mate, Bounce to the Beat is probably one of my favorites as well, but there are so many from that era to choose from.

I haven’t used the S2400 for a year or so… but anyways, yeah, I get those drop-outs all the time too (and I’ve only made a handful of quick sketches). Yes, hard to replicate.

Idk if they happen while fiddling w/ filters or sliders. I don’t F wid sliders too much; just the filters occasionally. Idk if it’s from the processor being overworked (my sketches weren’t complex nor jam packed at all tho).

I noticed they happen mainly while building a beat in regular loop/pattern mode. I don’t remember if they happened during song-mode. But, regardless, drop-outs are obviously no bueno if recording a completed project (and of course live use).

Interesting to hear that fooddude… like I said above I don’t want to derail Conan’s great post so I will be creating a new one over the weekend to discuss this issue (and hopefully filming a video of the issue as well), but thanks for adding your experience, it’s kinda good to know it’s not just my unit that is doing it regularly.

Very cool. Major influence for me as well. And weren’t there some videos of Kenny Dope using the early release of the S2400? I feel like I remember him being part of the tester/influencer/beta crew.

Yes he was one of the early testers. You can find the videos on his instagram (and possibly YouTube).
