FR10 - Send and receive samples via MIDI (SDS)

Feature Request #10 - MIDI Sample Transfer (SDS)[1]

Topics: sample management, external integration

Function

  • Receive and send samples via MIDI using SDS (Sample Dump Standard)

What would be gained

  • Robust, computer-independent method of sample storage, direct transfer, and sharing
    • in any MIDI environment:
      • Pure hardware setups
      • Vintage computers
      • Modern gear
  • Enables meaningful interchange with:
    • Vintage samplers (e.g. AKAI S612, S700, S900, S950, S01, …; Roland S50, S330, … )
      • esp. useful if delicate disk drive is defunct
    • Elektron machines (e.g. Machinedrum UW)
    • SDS-compatible tools (hardware, software)
  • S2400 could become the central sample-management hub in a non-DAW environment

UI Suggestion

  • Receiving samples:
    • Automatically save to project RAM and file (/incoming)
    • Prompt user to assign to bank/track in current project
  • Sending samples:
    • From the file menu
    • From the track menu
  • option to set sample format (number of significant bits)
    • for certain other machines
    • for sped up process if sending 12-bit samples
  • options for bulk transfer

Sample Dump Standard? Wow, what a blast from the past!

Peavey SP/SX sampler used it and it was slow as molasses, but bomb proof.
Was a great way to load in stuff from other samplers, IIRC… (emphasis on iirc, the 90’s are a bit of a haze here and there… )

Definitely an excellent suggestion. There are also lots of old but gold Software programs that could interface with the S2400 using SDS.
