I’m wondering if I should get the S2400. So far I’ve just been using the Teenage Engineering KO II, and I absolutely love how it works, especially the hands on feel, live effects, and how fun it is for making and manipulating beats. That said, I’m looking for something that can be the centrepiece of my setup.
I’m hoping to move further into live sets and possibly gigging, in which case this would be my main machine. I’m also keen on making full tracks using just one piece of gear. The version I’ve been looking at also has a DSP installed.
I’m not specifically chasing the 12 bit sound, but from the videos I’ve seen it looks and sounds great. My concern is whether I’d be overpaying if sound character isn’t my main priority. My other options would be the MPC Live 2 or 3, or the OP XY from Teenage Engineering.
Get the S2400 you can’t go wrong. Here is a crazy option available too….

The S2400 is AMAZING and while you can do most of what you want to do, one of the current MPCs would most likely deliver the most bang for your buck. I have an MPC X that is an excellent piece of gear but at times I get stuck because of option overload and it lacks the sound quality and simplicity that the S2400 brings to the table for me. I used to own a live 2 and I would say that if I were to do a lot of live gigs that would be my instrument of choice; and you can grab a used live 2 way cheaper than an S2400 since there are so many out in the wild.

Nothing comes close to the playability of the S2400. The faders, the buttons, everything is human sized (looking at you OP-XY). It’s an instrument, and that is what I appreciate most about mine. It makes me want to sit down and practice. It’s a very satisfying tactile experience. Everything is quality, there’s no denying that.
The workflow does take getting used to. It didn’t feel intuitive to me when I first got it. But now, I actually think if I were to let go of it I’d regret it, because there’s nothing else like it. Multi-mode, the concept of performing in patterns over programming them, the hi-fi envelopes, the faders… It’s changed the way I relate to beat making. I came from Elektron - and while I miss the shit out of p-locks - I have come to appreciate the s2400 way of working… Which, does include things like p-locks, it’s just a far less streamlined way of getting there.
The DSP cards is nuts. The PARM Controller view lets you assign any of the knobs/faders to any plugin parameters. Filters, drive, reverbs, delay, whatever. You can set it up once and essentially forever have a perfectly tailored set of performance controls for however you like to make music. The Airwindows plugins included are all I use and I am plenty happy with them. The chamber reverb from PocketVerbs sounds so fucking good on drums. His filters and drive plugins sound great, the eqs get the job done, so do the compressors. If you can’t get the s2400 ABSOLUTELY burning the house down with the dsp card, that’s on you. You can get this thing sounding superb with the right samples, programming and dsp chains.
I knew nothing about the sound/legacy of the 1200 when I got mine. I love it and haven’t even used the analog filtered outputs or any of the 12-bit resampling techniques. It’s built for a lifetime and I hope to have mine for the rest of mine.
