I 2-Step!!!
At 2:05 in this Instagram video Alex demonstrates a great way to work with multi sampled instruments.
Evidently he sampled a synth chromatically and, from just one sample file containing the series of notes, has sequenced a bass line using the sample slice-to-step parameter.
Multisampling is something I have been curious about, but didn’t really expect firmware 1.0 to have full piano roll style multi sample editing as you would find on the Ableton Sampler, Kontakt, and Maschine, etc. This solution appears really simple and intuitive, given the capability and workflow of the S2400 sequencer.
Maybe it’s totally obvious for people who have experience with Elektron sequencers or other gear that has so-called parameter locks, but for me it was a minor revelation. Here I was, only thinking about sequencing slices of drum loops as a way to economize the 32 available slots, instead of assigning chops to pads! Always a pleasure to learn something new from others’ experience.
Thanks to Alex for the breakdown, including this fantastic tip! I know I’ll be making use of it with the Samples from Mars synths, my own equipment, and other sampled instruments built from a chromatic series of notes or tuned percussion.
Yeah, that was an awesome idea/tip he did!
Also, a revelation for me and mind-blown, haha. I would never think of chromatically sampling individual notes from a synth with my MPC60 or S950, due to limited sample-time.
S950, I’ve always just done one-shots/one-note of synths (but like he mentioned, the time/length changes).
This S2400 gonna open up many new possibilities.
Like in his demo, if you really wanted to, you could actually make an entire song/jam inside just the S2400 - chromatically sampling synths into it, without ever midi sequencing external gear.
Of course, like most, I will still externally midi sequence gear tho (for knob tweaks, etc.), hehe.
Agreed, but I can still see applications for using multiple seperate samples like pitch, volume and the ability ti mute/solo a specfic snare etc… Unless you’re going to step edit every instance of those.
great that it allows this method of slicing, i am used to this after years of octatrack usage, being able to sequence slices is masterful at getting more audio from 8 tracks, if you are cute you can really stretch your material
see how the 8 tracks are not so limited hehe
btw @noisemodule thanks as i dont have IG so i miss all this stuff unless someone posts it
come on 2400
it is gonna love being neighbours with my octatrack
I started IG just to follow the S2400, lol.
I’ve dreaded IG for a long time.
Just to be clear, will there be a print/pdf manual for the S2400 as well though?
@sunshine is doing the manual for the s2400
im surprised you folks havent thought about this, very exciting! as soon as i heard multi slice mode this is all i thought about using it for! and w drums, having diff hats etc, and notes, maybe there are other uses I haven’t thought about that you folks have! very cool, to be inspired as we await! Cheers and ill check out some other vids from alex.
and @thepmo thepmo yea there will be a print pdf manual too! and by @sunshine who I’ve really enjoyed his posts on ig he is very into design art and visual form function layout and everything, and a great writer too, absolutely perfect to have be doing the work im quite looking forward to! great to be a part as this comes together cheers
