What am I missing with the SP-1200?

I picked up an OG Emu SP-1200 and honestly I’d prefer to use my 2400. Maybe I need to spend more time with it but it feels like I’m working twice as hard.

You’re missing a large amount of money that could be used elsewhere…

The workflow and limitations of sample time is what makes the OG 1200 so incredible. It forces you to be creative. Plus, nothing sounds like it. The swing is also unique to the OG. I have both and I appreciate what the 2400 has done, but nothing can compare to the SP1200.

Lol not necessarily, let’s just say I am no longer an SP 1200 owner and have no desire to own one again. And you are 100% correct. I just had to find out what was it about this machine that made it so coveted for decades.

@HD85 Nah, its a classic but s2400 is a good replacement (and upgrade, at least for my needs). The limited sampling time is a fun limitation. I enjoyed the lack of screen / use your ears approach on it. But s2400 takes the idea and expands on it for use in the modern era.

I think for a lot of people, it’s a mental block. Me who owned 3 SP1200’s over the years and an SP12 had to finally drag myself into buying and trying an S2400. In order for me to get past that initial SHOCK OF, This is not an SP1200 and way more futuristic & complicated was… thinking in my head, how can I make this feel more like an SP1200?
The first step is to save it and start it up in 12bit Mode. Only use the left Mono inpyt and output. Step 2… adjust it’s sample time to the same of the SP1200’s. You can set the S2400 to only give you a very short time per sample. The last step was set sampling input to Mono. Sample .mp3’s from my traktor D.J. system and Technics on 45 RPM. Then pitch down my sample on the S2400. If you use it pre set up like this you’ll feel right at home again. Plus you also won’t need to deal with 3.5" disks again. It’s the same to me as far as only sampling in mono in and playing back mono at 12bit 26 khz Another thinkmg guys… just because the S2400 has so many options and features doesn’t mean you or I need to learn or use them. Only use what you need to use and in the same way you used your SP1200. Take my advice, less is more in this case. Get back to feeling like your using the good ol’ SP1200. We are all Truely blessed by having this S2400. Get past that shock and brain wash. Also, set the swing on the sequencer correctly I belive it was 57% on the SP1200 was the maximum swing rate. I mostly used 50% at 16 T

Great response and cool bio, too.
Wasn’t sure I replied correctly last time.
