Figuring out effects sends with the DSP card

Apologies if this is well understood, but I can’t quite get there from watching the video:

I’ve installed my DSP card seemingly fine, and can successfully run plugins. However, I’m stuck with the plugin an a channel insert - e.g. if I load a kit with a kick on channel 1, go to the DSP mixer and load a plugin on that channel, I hear the effect @ 100%.

What I’m trying to wrap my head around is as to what the A/B sends do, and how to use them - e.g. is it possible to send some amount of signal from (say) channel 1 and have it mixed with the dry? The DSP mixer fader also ends up controlling the entire channel gain as-is, so I’m trying to determine what I’ve missed - at least until the manual is updated. Thanks!

The usual thinking would be your send buss is the reverb and that plug is fully wet. So your direct level is the fader, can vary per source, and then the reverb send is the buss send, also controllable per source.

Right - but in the case above where I insert the plug-in on channel 1, I get a totally wet signal with A and B sends set to 0% that the fader controls the gain of. I’ve clearly missed something.

if i understood it right, you will just use your fader or assign knobs depending on the plugin to turn and affect the plugin on its channel . the A/B sends still provide the option to further move the sounds around the chain. The DSP is intercepting whatever you have assigned to the routing and applying it to an out… the dsp is providing a secondary option- u tell it what you want…

Right! I guess I’m asking - will it always run as an insert, or is there a way I can send to the plugin with a return on a separate bus?

When on the DSP page (Bank + 0) press either 0 or Enter and it’ll take you to a second DSP page that has a Return A, Return B, and Main column. When pressing Shift + (Pad 1),(Pad 2), or (Pad 3) it’ll take you to your respective Return busses or Main (master) Bus. Here you can apply effects and then when you press Enter or 0 again to go back to the main Mixer page, you can then use either the Top or Bottom Encoders of the respective tracks to send the track to either Return A or Return B.

That’s it! I didn’t get that I was setting the plugins for the effects sends on that second page (I think the confusion is that you set it on what’s marked as the return and not the send). Thanks!

I’m having a strange issue with FX on bus B. I’ve added FX onto Bus B but when I go to send audio to bus B (from the DSP mixer page via the bottom encoder) no effects are applied.

Send bus A works, effects on each DSP channels work, and effects on the Master bus work, just any on bus B don’t.

Any ideas?

[Edit 1] Send A and Send B are both set to Post Fader - basically I’m in the default set up trying out the DSP card.

[Edit 2] Doesn’t look like the Live FX are working either…

I’ve encountered strange inconsistencies with Send A and Send B depending on mode. Post Fader mode has been particularly problematic.

If I have Send A set to post fader the amount of signal received by Return B is affected by how much Send A (and of course Send B) is turned up.

You can read more details of my testing here: DSP: Irregularities between Send A and Send B in Post Fader, Pre Insert, and Post Insert Modes.

OK, I opened up the S2400 re-checked all the connections, re-installed the FW and the DSP FW. But the problem remains.

Playing around further, Send B only seems to work if I’m also sending to Send A - it’s as if the two are chained with A feeding into B.

Send B does work when I have the DSP Channel Send B parameter set to Post Insert or Pre Insert.

With regards to the Live FX not working, I can add an effect before the Live FX and that works, but Live FX for me does not work at all.

I can only conclude that these are bugs or if not then something isn’t liking my machine.

I’ll add this to the bug reports and see what comes back.

Thank you for confirming similar issues with Send A and Send B, I wasn’t sure if it was a connection issue on my end.

With the Live FX are you making sure to also press down on the pad? You won’t hear the effect unless it is held down. My apologies if this is an obvious suggestion, Live FX operation wasn’t immediately clear to me at first.

Ah you’re right - I forgot they need activating via the pads. Thanks for the reminder.

OK - so it’s just the Sends which are just acting weird…
