Hey y’all I’m in the age old debate, 808’s in boom bap or nah? I was listening to the Infamous and survival of the fittest came on and I noticed the 808 tucked away. Do y’all prefer 808’s in boom bap or prefer no 808’s in 90’s boom bap?
And anyone know if the 808’s were sampled in to the 1200 backing the days or were they done separately and then fed into a mixer? It got me thinking because I might be wrong but they don’t really have that 12 bit ring to them.
I think you could say that 808 kicks were used a lot to layer with acoustic kicks. Not so much what you would call an 808 nowadays in youtube speak. But of course the decay to infinity boom was used too (I think miami bass was influential there).
You probably don’t have a ring in those sounds because any bass sounds would be lp filtered below the threshold of the ringing being audible.
I prefer to refer to the 808 as the device Roland made that became a classic. You can easily obtain any of these sounds to 100% accuracy without that device.
You’re referring to the weirdly tuned overdriven bass kick drum it can do, which has become synonymous with modern hip-hop and everybody calls it an 808.
